Makru – Fanka version (Individual djembe dunun demo and performance)

Makru is a popular rhythm that’s played with another rhythm – Yankadi – during the Yankadi festival of the Susu people from the coastal region of Guinea.

Party time! We hope you enjoy it!

Medley: Lîla & Denadon

A medley arrangement of ‘Lîla’ (an original rhythm written by Kelvin Kew) and ‘Denadon’ (a traditional rhythm from Guinea, West Africa).

Shot at Bayfront Avenue, Singapore.

Medley: Jump & Shuffle

A medley of our original tunes Jump & Shuffle, arranged by Kelvin Kew.

Shot at Lake Batur, Bali.

Kuku de Maoka

Traditional rhythm from Guinea, West Africa.

Shot at Pura Ulun Danu Batur, Bali.

NOTE: Traditionally the dununba part is a 2 bar phrase as taught by master drummer Mamady Keita. In our rendition of this rhythm we arranged to it to be a 1 bar phrase for more ‘push’ in a performance setting.

This was not in the original plan in our Bali MV shoot.
It was spontaneous and we just bang!

Our band learn & respect what is traditional, and interpret in a way that doesn’t entirely alter tradition and at the same time staying true to how we want to express ourselves.

Djembe Pyramid of Rhythm (TTM Singapore)

This piece was arranged in partial fulfillment for Kelvin Kew’s Tam Tam Mandingue Diploma Test. This test is catered for TTM Certified Teachers only so as to qualify them to teach professional students.
